How Vinyl Pressing Quality Affects Playback on High-End Audio Systems

The resurgence of vinyl records as an audio format has shown no signs of letting up! In 2024, 44 million vinyl LPs were sold in the US alone — a 6.2% increase from the previous year. Maybe you remember the days when vinyl was king, or perhaps you’re a new arrival to the scene. Whichever it might be, the deeper you get into it, the more you start to notice the many factors which affect the vinyl listening experience. These include the various components of the turntable and their respective individual qualities, as well as the quality of the vinyl records themselves.

In bulk manufacturing of any kind, every unit produced is not going to be identical; different pressings of the same record can often vary wildly depending on the pressing plant and the company releasing them. The subtle details of whether a vinyl record is a “good” or “bad” pressing are more evident on high-end audio systems where the details of the media can be more clearly heard. Here are some thoughts about how vinyl pressing quality can affect playback on these audiophile systems.

Understanding vinyl pressing quality

Making vinyl records is truly a nuanced art. Let’s start by explaining the pressing process and all that it entails.

The pressing process

After music is mixed and mastered, a master disc is created using a cutting lathe. These discs are usually made from lacquer-coated aluminum, but can also be made from copper. When you use copper, the process is known as direct metal mastering (DMM). This produces sharper sound and more accurate vinyl pressings. In either case, the lathe uses a special stylus to cut the recording into the surface of the disc. The cutting engineer or engineers pay close attention to the sound levels and movement of the stylus in order to ensure that the groove is cut correctly to prevent errors on the final pressed records.

Once the master disc is checked for flaws, the next step is to create a stamper which will press the groove of the master disc into blank vinyl. The master disc is then coated with liquid silver, dipped into a vat of pure nickel, and given an electromagnetic charge. This process is known as “electroplating” and is used for lacquer-coated aluminum master discs (also known as “acetates”). Copper DMM discs do not need to be electroplated. Once in the nickel bath, the nickel fills in the grooves and is separated after removal to create the stamper. One stamper can press about 1500 records, so for runs of more units, multiple stampers must be created.

Records are then pressed at high temperature and pressure using the stamper and a block of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) called a “biscuit” (yes, records are made from the same material as PVC pipe). The heat and pressure mold the vinyl into its shape and press the recorded grooves into the surface of the vinyl. After pressing, the edges of the vinyl discs are trimmed, and the discs are cooled. Then, the records are then ready for packaging.

Factors that influence pressing quality

From the type of material to the meticulousness of the equipment, there are many factors at play when it comes to pressing vinyl. Let’s dive in.

Material quality

Most vinyl records are made from recycled vinyl. While this is the most eco-sustainable practice, vinyl that has not been previously used (called “virgin vinyl”) is the highest quality for pressing. Some pressing plants also use their own proprietary vinyl compounds to provide a truly balanced biscuit. Direct metal mastering is a superior method to the electroplating method used with lacquer, as it eliminates steps from the process, so there are fewer possibilities for errors. The copper master disc is also a harder material and there is a less of a chance of introducing noise, or what is called “groove wall bounce-back echo” into it while cutting.

Precision of the pressing equipment

Care and attention to detail in the pressing process absolutely leads to better vinyl records. Many record collectors praise Japanese record pressings for this reason. Especially in the ‘60s and ‘70s, there was a better emphasis on quality control in Japan when compared to most Western manufacturers. Japanese plants tend to press records in smaller batches as well, which also adds to sound quality. The more stampers you make from the original acetate, the more the sound quality degrades.

One relatively recent development has been the pressing of records originally released in 33 RPM as 45 RPM, making some albums into multi-disc sets. Cutting an album at 45 RPM means the grooves can be cut more precisely and there will be a larger distance between them (this enhances all aspects of the recorded sound).

Mastering and lacquer cutting

Some audiophiles believe that you need to master from an analog source to vinyl in order to accurately preserve the source waveform. Yet the audiophile records released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab have a digital processing stage that most people aren’t able to perceive. While the jury is still out on this particular issue, make sure that if you are mastering from digital files that your mastering engineer has made a specific master for vinyl manufacturing. There are also mostly likely alterations that need to be made to account for the vinyl medium, including sibilance de-essing, low end adjustments, addressing the song order vs placement on the disc, and other issues. Even if these alterations are minor, they’ll make a huge difference on your finished records. Do NOT use compressed digital files — only lossless. Digital compression artifacts sound awful everywhere, but especially on vinyl. If your master recording is digital, make sure the files used to create your acetate are WAV, Apple Lossless, or another uncompressed format so that you don’t sacrifice your audio quality for streaming.

Lacquer cutting is an art, and it’s crucial to the final sound of a record. It makes sense to trust this part of the process to a seasoned professional who really knows what they are doing. Many suggest hiring a third-party lacquer cutting engineer to ensure you have the highest quality acetate for pressing purposes. If that seems too pricey or cumbersome, make sure that the pressing plant you use allows you to communicate with the cutting engineer and has a proofing process. Pressing plants can do a fine job cutting lacquers, but generally they are conservative with their cutting levels and apply default high and low filters to help avoid playback issues. This may or may not sound good with your style of music. Working with a dedicated cutting engineer can help mitigate potential issues and apply the care and precision your music requires.

Impact of vinyl pressing quality on playback

Now that we’ve explored some factors that impact the pressing quality, let’s talk about vinyl playback and how it can be impacted by the quality of your pressing.

Sound clarity and definition

In the most basic sense, vinyl records are sound waves that have been transformed into physical grooves on a disc. The movement of the stylus mimics the original sound vibrations which are then amplified by the turntable and turned back into sound waves that we hear through speakers. The more evenly these grooves are distributed and the more precisely they are cut into the original acetate, the better the record is going to sound. Remember, the more care and precision that is applied to every step of the vinyl pressing process, the better your final product will sound! The highs will be defined but not shrill, the lows will be resonant but not distorted, and the instruments will be heard in the mix as they were intended by the artist.

Presence of surface noise

A cleanly pressed, brand-new vinyl record should have a minimal amount of surface noise. While you will never eliminate surface noise entirely with an analog medium like vinyl, the best-pressed records will only have a tiny amount of noise perceptible as “warmth” and not as pops, crackles, clicks, or static. Static noise can often be eliminated through items like a cork turntable mat and various anti-static cleaning brushes; pops too can often be cleaned from the grooves. A high-end audio system will be sophisticated enough to tell whether the record just needs cleaning or if there is an inherent problem with the pressing.

Groove distortion and skipping

In 1971, Robert Ludwig mastered Led Zeppelin II as hot as possible at the request of Jimmy Page and mixing engineer Eddie Kramer. While the record sounded amazing on high-end audio systems, it skipped on cheap turntables — including the one owned by the daughter of Ahmet Ertegun, who was the President of Atlantic Records. So, the entire record had to be recut to make sure it played on all systems. These “RL hot mix” pressings are now pricey collectors’ items!

That anecdote notwithstanding, if your vinyl record is distorted and skipping, there are a few things to troubleshoot before assuming it’s a poor press. You could have a worn-out stylus or trouble with your tonearm. An audiophile pressing (whether direct metal mastered, 45 RPM pressed, or otherwise) will be less likely to have intrinsic problems, but it does happen. Always check to make sure the record is clean and there are no visible marks before assuming a pressing problem.

If distortion is happening mainly near the center of the record (i.e. the songs at the end of each side), it’s more likely to be an issue with the mixing and mastering of the record and not an issue with the pressing itself.

High-end audio systems and their sensitivity

Let’s take a deeper look at the characteristics of high-end audio and explore the ways in which pressing deficiencies can be revealed during playback.

Characteristics of high-end audio systems

High-end audio systems for vinyl listening have the highest quality turntables, receivers, and speakers. What constitutes “highest quality” is a subject of much-heated debate between audiophiles. Some subjects on which there is no unified agreement include belt drive vs. direct drive turntables, vintage vs. modern receivers, and vintage vs. modern speakers. An audiophile will spend significant money on very nice equipment that will enable them to listen to vinyl records the way they would like to hear them. Chances are that this expensive equipment is of sufficient quality that, if there are listening issues, they are most likely not coming from the gear itself. Some general things high fidelity audio components have in common is clarity of highs, lows, and ability to hear the stereo mix the way it was intended. You will also notice flaws in the recording, mixing, mastering, and vinyl pressing more readily, especially in your own music.

How high-end systems reveal pressing deficiencies

Troubleshooting anything mechanical or electronic involves evaluating every possible area where something might go wrong. For example, if you are hearing a crackle while playing your electric guitar, you’ll need to check the cord, the amplifier, any effect/cords in your signal chain, and the guitar itself. One way that high-end systems reveal pressing deficiencies is by eliminating the system itself as a cause. If you know your equipment and cables are all in working order, then you can look to the record itself as the source. If the record has been properly cleaned and there are no visible scratches and/or scuffs, then a pressing deficiency might be the only possible cause of some kind of vinyl noise. Process of elimination!

Improving playback experience

Lastly, let’s discuss a few ways to make your playback experience as flawless as possible. Your music deserves it!

Choosing high-quality pressings

In this day and age, there are more vinyl options to choose from than ever before. The advent of 180g vinyl as an audio standard has boosted quality all around, though in general, standard vinyl was pressed better in the heyday of the medium (1950–1990) than it is now. Less care and attention is paid to the mass production of modern vinyl, especially when it comes to the digital files used as the source. But on the flip side (pun intended), high-quality pressings are more readily available from artists themselves and from the various vinyl companies above. Used vinyl is also plentiful and easy to find thanks to sites like Discogs. Then, new decisions arise: a mint-condition original pressing and a brand-new audiophile pressing might cost the same, so you’ll have to weigh what is most important to you. Becoming familiar with the different pressings of a release will arm you with the knowledge to make informed purchases. The Steve Hoffman Music Forums and Reddit often are great sources of information on which pressings people prefer. Ultimately it comes down to your own preferences and ears, but it’s good to have some input before you spend your money.

When it comes to your own music, listening to your test pressings on a high-end audio system is a great way to check for vinyl defects. Listen for extraneous noises that weren’t what you recorded, and of course for pops and clicks that might be part of the vinyl and not just dust. Make sure to listen to 5–10 pressings from every run as a sample. Also listen to ensure that your audio isn’t distorted, the hole isn’t off center, and that the newly pressed records aren’t warped.

Caring for vinyl records to maintain quality

The nice part about digital downloads is that you don’t have to clean them! But if you are investing in vinyl records, you’ll want to keep them in excellent condition. Anti-static sleeves and a good record cleaning system like Spinclean will go a long way to preserving your investment. Carbon fiber brushes used before and after playing will help keep dust and particles off your records. Always handle your vinyl records with care, holding them by the edges so as not to put smudges or fingerprints on the vinyl surface itself. Store records upright to avoid warping and unintentional damage. Keep them in a clean, dry place free of moisture. Do all of these things regularly and you’ll have a vinyl collection in pristine condition.
