It’s the end of the year – time to make a Top 10 best of list for 2012 and stir up some controversy. If you’ve got an opinion and time to kill, you’re sure to get embroiled in a debate. About.com’s alternative music site features an abundance of new music content and lists, including a best albums of 2012 list. You’re sure to find a few you’ve never heard of here. Other genres covered by the site include ’80s, Blues, Children’s, Christian/Gospel, Classic Rock, Classical, Country, Dance/Electronica, Digital, Folk, Heavy Metal, Jazz, Latin, Oldies, Punk, R&B/Soul, Rap/Hip-Hop, Rock, Theater, Top 40/Pop, and World.
2. 40 Best Songs of 2012 – SPIN.com
SPIN’s uber hip sensibilities are on full display, with plenty of lists, including their 50 Best Albums of the year, and list of “outrageous and memorable” quotes from 2012.
3. 100 Greatest Artists – RollingStone.com
The 100 Greatest Artists is an all-time thing, not just 2012. They also have a “greatest albums” and “greatest songs” list to get you rankled, as well as a “50 Best Songs of 2012” list to compare to SPIN’s.
4. 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards Nominees – Grammy.com
They’re all here, in all the categories you’ve come to love, and some you might not be familiar with. Best Rap/Sung Collaboration! Best Album Notes! Best Surround Sound Album? Not all of them make the telecast…
5. The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time – GuitarWorld.com
For a few months, Guitar World ran a reader’s poll and set it up in a NCAA bracket style head-to-head matchup. Here are the results of their efforts. There’s plenty of hysteria over the choices going on here already, so you’ll have to bring your A-game if you want to weigh in.
6. 2012 Music Critic Top Ten Lists – Metacritic.com
This is a compilation list, where they collect and weight year-end Top Ten lists published by major music critics and form a list from the lists. Get it?
7. 10 Best Songs Of 2012 – MTV.com
MTV still has “music experts.” Who knew?
8. 10 Artists You Should Have Known In 2012 – NPR.org
NPR Music weighs in. They also have a number of end-of-year music lists, including their “50 Favorite Albums Of 2012” and lists specific to jazz, folk, and classical.
9. RIP Musicians Who Died in 2012
Spinner.com and Ranker.com both have lists that include notable deaths in the music world in 2012. Missing from both (at the time of this posting) are Ravi Shankar, Dave Brubeck, and Jenni Rivera.
10. 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees – RockHall.com
As notable for their selections as for the artists not included, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced 2013’s inductees, which includes at least one act that gets removed from the various “snub” lists. (Read a previous post on the HOF).
11. Top 25 Music Videos Of 2012 – Stereogum.com
What the heck, here’s a bonus list to make it 11 for 2012. Stereogum’s top videos. They’ve got lots of others to enjoy on their Lists Post.
