For all of you bloggers out there – and those of you looking for blogging tips or wondering how to start a blog – our good friend Chris Rockett at PromoteYourMusic.net just published a massive post that answers the $10,000 question: “What are the secrets of entertaining blogging?”
More than 20 indie music movers and shakers weighed in with their music marketing advice, and Rockett assembled all the answers in his post.
Andre Calilhanna, Echoes’ editorial manager, delivered this little gem:
Your headline matters big time.
Your posts should always be filled with rich content, but the headline makes all the difference. Craft a good headline – something pithy, punchy, alarming, clever, racy – and you’ll get your click through. But you had better deliver on the content as well, or those clicks will start drying up.
Other words of wisdom include:
“Keep it short, keep it simple, and keep it visual.”
– Chris Robley (CD Baby)
“Blogging is all about quality – if you’re asking how often you should be blogging, you’re asking the wrong question. Some of my favourite blogs only post 3 or 4 times a year, others post 5 times a week and I still read every single post.”
– Marcus Taylor (MusicLawContracts.com)
“Quit thinking about it. Quit reading and studying up on it. Just start. Now. Today (and tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that…)”
– Brian Thompson (Thorny Bleeder)

When I first started blogging it was hard for me to keep my post entertaining enough so that I could build a fan base. But over time I learned to be creative and to just be myself. I realized that people like to hear information from “real” people, rather than someone hiding behind a blog. I learned to give a little more of myself to my readers and to be more personable. I also agree with you when you say that blogging is all about quality. New, fresh content not only attracts the search engines but it also attract repeat visitors.
Focus on the reader, not the writer. Be authentic and original in style but write with a mission that is higher than self… be passionate!
