Can we call it a trend? In March we posted that overall album sales were up in 2011, and now we’ve received news from our comrades at CD Baby that physical CD sales for their independent artists are up from this time last year.

Perhaps this is due CD Baby’s wider distribution channel – they recently teamed up with Alliance Entertainment, the largest wholesale CD distributor in the world – or maybe this is a continuation of an industry-wide trend. Either way, it’s more good news for independent artists, for whom CD sales are an integral part of the promotion and revenue equation.

Of course, digital distribution is another important revenue generator for any musical artist, and in addition to the physical outlets via Alliance, Amazon.com, and Super D, CD Baby gets you selling downloads through iTunes, Facebook, and more.
