  1. Dear Aaron,

First of all, you need to change your way of thinking to, “I can cut it outdoors.” You are allowing your fears to control you. Feel the fear and do it anyway. It sounds like you are quite talented and have played many venues. Try to think of all your successes. What did you do to achieve those successes? This may sound wierd, but try practicing your music outside. When you feel a little bit more comfortable, play outside in front of those you trust who won’t make fun of you when you make mistakes. Visualize yourself playing outside in front of people and see yourself as successful. Practice deep breathing exercises. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, slowly. I’m guessing you play the guitar. Just play some chords do something easy to warm up your fingers. Whatever you do, tell yourself you can do it. Believe you can do it. Believing comes first before the ability to play outside. Last, but not least always pray for God to help you through this fear that has gotten a hold of you. Don’t miss out on opportunities due to fear. What’s the worse that can happen besides death. So you make mistakes. I bet most people in the audience can’t do what you can do anyway. I bet your playing doesn’t sound awful. Sometimes we can be super critical of our talents. Remember, not everyone has your talent. Just play and have fun.

  2. OK, here is my problem. I’m 42 and have been playing my whole life. 99 percent of my gigs have been clubs, bars or arenas. For some reason, I can’t seem to get it together when I have to play outside. I have passed on some good opportunities because I just know that I can’t cut it outdoors. My fingers freeze up, I can’t breathe right and everything just sounds AWFUL to me. What can I do? Thanks.
